Sowell & Co. has applied the tactic of proper timing and entrepreneurial assertiveness to achieve success in numerous arenas of industry.
Our Story
When the company was founded in 1972, the timing was perfect to build on three custom-home lots in the rapidly growing area of Arlington, Texas. The capital required was $1,500, which Jim Sowell borrowed from the $4,200 cash value of his father’s life insurance policy in order to make the initial deposit on the lots.
In the midst of its success as a custom-home builder, the company soon identified a new opportunity that would allow it to better leverage its strengths – developing single- and multi-family lots for resale to other builders. The Company soon transitioned from home builder to land developer, transacting on more than 400 properties across Texas.
The early work in land development yielded another natural opportunity – Oil & Gas, which became the second pillar of Sowell & Co.’s focus. Through the acquisition of numerous operating assets and non-operating interests, Sowell & Co. built a substantial portfolio, including Alpine Gas and Titan Rock. The Company continues to own valuable working interests, mineral rights and royalty portfolios, and non-operating investments in the Oil & Gas sector.
The third focus for the firm is direct investment in operating companies. Over the years, Sowell & Co. has been the principal owner of more than 20 companies, several of which have gone public. Sowell & Co. continues to hold and manage a variety of operating companies across various industries, while always pursuing new opportunities.
With its gift for timing and ability to quickly assemble resources to seize opportunities, the company continues to achieve success in numerous arenas of industry far beyond its initial ventures in real estate. Sowell & Co.’s abilities have allowed it not only to grow to be one of the largest land developers in Texas, but also to execute and deliver substantial returns across multiple sectors of business and investment.
